How HTTPS and SSL Certificates Safeguard Your Website

Last Updated: August 6, 2024By

HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) is a security protocol that helps to keep your site secure. This protocol is validated by an SSL certificate. HTTPS appears in the URL when a website is secured by an SSL certificate. All Webready sites have been enabled for HTTPS and include free hosting.

Important: Webready does not provide free SSL for domains or subdomains connected to external (non-Webready) websites; however, this can easily be purchased through Webready.

What is HTTPS?

HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a secure version of the HTTP protocol that uses the SSL/TLS protocol for encryption and authentication.

HTTP sites can potentially be accessed or manipulated by attackers. However, HTTPS makes it possible for website users to transmit sensitive data such as credit card numbers, banking information, and login credentials securely over the internet.

Our team at Webready is committed to protecting your data. Therefore, all sites created on Webready using a Webready domain have HTTPS automatically enabled at no additional cost. If you have a Webready site that is not yet SSL/TLS secured, you can easily complete the SSL process through your dashboard to enable HTTPS for that site.

Benefits of Using HTTPS

  • The information for those who visit your site is encrypted, making it more secure.
  • Having a secure site makes users more comfortable making purchases and sharing their personal information online.
  • Whenever a user visits a site that is not using HTTPS, Google Chrome now displays a warning. If your site is not secured, visitors to your site will get a warning message anytime they access your site.
  • Converting your site to HTTPS will improve your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) because Google ranks HTTPS sites more favorably.

What is an SSL Certificate?

A Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL certificate, provides a secure HTTPS connection between your browser and the site you’re visiting. It safeguards any sensitive data that is being sent between two systems, preventing criminals from reading and modifying any information transferred, including potential personal details.

Websites created by Webready include an SSL certificate. You can verify that your site has an SSL certificate if the URL begins with https:// instead of http://.

If you do not have an SSL certificate enabled, your website URL displays an “!” icon.
A website URL with an SSL certificate displays a lock icon.

Webready allows you to automatically generate SSL certificates for custom domains and subdomains connected to your site.

If someone accesses your site using these browsers, they may encounter problems loading the HTTPS version of your site. To avoid these issues, we recommend using a supported browser to view or edit your site.
